Hi all.
Jeffrey here.
“No Dot About It” is this week’s puzzle title and each theme answer removes the dot that denotes an abbreviated word and leaves a new word in its place.
18a [Refusal to work the 1-800 line?] – TOLL FREE NO (Toll free number).
23a [Bottom line value of a preschooler?] – TOT NET WORTH (Total net worth).
38a [Transit riding/relaxed clothing style?] – BUS CASUAL ATTIRE (Business casual attire).
51a [Distance stat in a missy’s marathon?] – MILES PER GAL (Miles per gallon).
60a [Dad count in a certain area?] – POP DENSITY (Population density).
Canadian content:
5a [Canadian rival of Kindle with an apt anagram] – KOBO. So there was Coles Bookstore which included Toronto’s “The World’s Biggest Bookstore” and there was W.H. Smith which became Smithbooks. Smithbooks and Coles merged to form Chapters. Chapters merged with Indigo. Indigo created Kobo. Got that?
28a [Will be in Québec] – SERA. Sera is French but Que Sera Sera isn’t. Got that?
42a [“(You’re) Having My Baby” singer] – ANKA. Paul Anka is of course best known for Smells Like Teen Spirit. Believe that?
69a [Osgoode Hall entrance exam] – LSAT. Law School Admission Test. Osgoode Hall is the law school at York University. Graduates include my brother.
8d [Canadian “Father of Modern Medicine”] – OSLER. Sir William Osler was a Canadian physician and one of the four founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital (which is not in Canada.)
25d [Words in “The Friendly Giant” intro] – WAY UP. “Look up, way up, and I’ll call Rusty.” I did not have to look up to remember that. I loved the Friendly Giant, but I was never fooled by the little chairs.
Tip of the Week:
If you look up, way up, you’ll find Rusty.
See you next week!
” …but I was never fooled by the little chairs” just what are you saying, Jeffrey? Is there something I should know about the little chairs that I loved so much, especially the … “big armchair for two more to curl up in when you come again to our castle”?
David, I wasn’t fooled that the chairs were full size and Friendly was a Giant. But I loved it too.
